The clutch should be engaged when properly installed. It disengages when the rod pushes from the opposite side. Does it look that way to you?

hmmm.
engaged, meaning that the clutch and friction disks are not free spinning?
No it doesn't look that way to me. lol
the plates are loose. {used parts? maybe something missing?}
I might have to take some pics.
The second pushrod was never actually removed, just number 1 and the ball.
so the clutch lever actuates the 2nd rod?

Phantom,

That clutch pack should be tight with no play at all in the plates. Something is wrong with the assembly. Wrong number of plates, no springs, or something didn't go together right. I don't have one in front of me to look at so let's see if someone else can pitch in here with more suggestions. One more thing - if one of the plates gets hung up on the fingers (maybe due to a burr or bent finger) you could get the nut to take torque but not have the clutch pack squeezed down.

Kevin

Kevin's correct in that the clutch is engaged (plates are tight) until you pull the lever at which point it disengages (many people have this backwards).

The way it works is that when you pull in the lever, the cable turns a spiral grooved mechanism inside the front sprocket cover. It's grooved in such a way the vertical motion of the cable turns into horizontal motion which pushes the pushrod / ball / pushrod system toward the right side of the bike. This is what disengages the clutch. Sorry, if my explanation isn't too clear. Have a look at this fiche page and it may start to make sense (specifically #16, #17):

http://www.cyclepartswarehouse.com/fiche_s...92&fveh=476

The clutch cable connects to #16 which is also the part that moves. #17 is mounted to the sprocket cover.

Make sure the pressure plate is correctly installed - it goes on 5 different ways, 4 of which are wrong. There is a dot on the hub and a triangle on the pressure plate, and they have to line up.

Don,

Good Call! This is most likely the problem. Phantom - let us know if this works.
