FZR750 Valve clearances

Hi all,

I have just picked up my new FZR750 and, after a strip and sort of some issues (clutch bleed, carb set up, perished inlet rubbers, idle speed set to a million rpm etc) I have just opened it up on the queens highway (I'm in the UK) and FFAAAAAAACK this thing is quick!

Anyway, once started the bike is awsome but getting it started from cold is difficult and from hot is nigh on impossible. This in my humble opinion, is valve clearances so I'm just looking for a little advice.

A) The engine has done 60,000 kms. Is it worth getting the head off anyway to check the valves out or is it likely that just a re-shim will do the biz?
B) What are the intake and exhaust clearances on the 750?
C) Are there any other known issues with the engine that while I've got in there I should consider doing as part of the job?

D) Any other tips?

Cheers dudes,

Mark

New to FZR Stuff

Hey guys, just bought an 89 Exup 1000 and came with a Barnett clutch kit that was no where near the size of my clutch? Any way just bought this bike as an " erector set", they guy was supposed to come up with the gauge cluster and 17 in rear wheel and hasn't, anyone got these for sale? Never had a Yamaha sportbike, the closest thing I have had in over 20 bikes is an Fj 1100. I was a diehard Suzuki guy, but couldn't pass up this deal, anyone that has "useless" spare parts, I probably need them. Let me know!

Tony

Got my provisional race license! (WERA)

Well guys, went out to Beaverun today with WERA and did the Riders School. My instructor was Tommy B (rides an old Kawasaki 750 2 stroke). He was a cool dude...mostly the things that were new to me were some of the flags (pickles and meatballs) but it was overall a good learning experience classroom wise, at the least he gave me confidence in telling me i looked very smooth and I was going in the right direction.

Got to go out on the track 4 times (2 bs sessions, a *practice* and the mock race). This was the first time Ive had the FZR out with the 600 motor I installed.....found myself braking a lot earlier than with the 400 engine Gobs of power...running great.

Anyway, 2 very cool things (IMO). The gentleman who encouraged me to get the license came up to watch me for a while, his name is Jim Campeau used to be a FZR fanatic years ago now rides a blue TZ250 if anyone recognizes him. Point of this story, he timed me for two laps on the practice session.. I ran a 1:17! Personal best and blew my old time of 1:24 away which I ran on my Ducati, a bike which I am MUCH more familiar/comfortable with since its my street ride. I know I have tons of room for improvement and I know Im nowhere near pushing the limits of my machine.

Now I have a disclaimer:I am not trying to gloat, and I am by no means *fast* but it felt pretty damn good! Mock race consisted of myself and a gentleman who had a 02+ R1 which was completely done up(suspension/bodywork/exhaust/slicks).

I got him off the line..stayed ahead for a lap til the front straight. He comes BLOWING by me down the straight into the first turn...but alas, despite the fact that we both agreed it wasnt a "real race" and we simply didnt want to crash, well unfortunately for him he was going way too fast trying to pass me, even stuck his leg out to try to make the turn. Ran off into the grass at turn 1! I continued my pace around the track and he was nowhere insight.....soooo in my 4 lap mock race my little FZR finished ahead of a R1.

Moral of the story, had an AWESOME day, cant wait to actually start racing!! Bruce Egan and Scott(Black FZR400 #52) send their regards Looking forward to meeting some of you guys as well.

TRX850 rear end, converted for 1WG frame

I've got a TRX850 rear end, with the swingarm pivot machined down to fit in a 3EN1 (1WG) frame and bushes to sleeve the pivot tube down to 16mm to suit the 1WG. The swingarm is aluminium. The rear wheel is the same as the FZR600R or YZF600 (Thundercat) and the sprocket carrier, brake parts and torque arm are the same too. The wheel is a 5 x 17". There are no non-standard parts, other than the pivot bushes.

The swingarm is a straight fit in the frame and uses all of the standard linkage parts. The 160/60-17 tyre is actually slightly taller than the 140/70-18 so you gain a little ride height.

Here's a bad picture of it fitted to my old 3EN1-

£50, plus shipping for the swingarm (if you want to source the other parts yourself), or £150 for all of the parts (minus the tyre!) plus shipping. I'm in the UK.
